How to Boost Your Confidence at the Gym

Craig Middleton
The gym can be an intimidating place. Maybe you are just getting started on your fitness journey or it has been a while since you last had a gym membership. No matter where you find yourself, if you feel like it's hard to find your groove at the gym, do not worry. There are simple ways to make it your own.

1. Start Small

One of the best ways to help you feel more at ease in the gym is by starting small. Starting once you arrive sends you into a state of nervous sweating, take heart. Setting small goals can help you feel more confident because they tend to be easy to manage and complete.
A small goal might be as simple as just getting yourself to the gym! Your next goal might be to step onto the treadmill and walk for five minutes. Depending on your fitness level, your goal might look different, but no matter what it is, checking the list will give you a sense of accomplishment!

2. Take a Class

Another way to feel more confident at the gym is by signing up for a class. Some gyms offer drop-in options and some offer registered ones. A class offers you the chance to learn new moves under the guidance of a professional instructor. If you return week after week.
Tracking your progress as you go, you will be able to determine how much you have improved, and can be a big confidence booster! If you just want to drop-in to one class to learn a couple of new exercises, you can incorporate those into your personal workout routine, giving you a fallback plan should you ever find yourself unsure at the gym.

3. Invest in Gear

What you wear can have a big impact on your confidence level. There is nothing worse than getting to the gym and feeling frumpy or out of place. It might not seem like a big deal, but if you dress in clothes that make you feel great, you can influence your confidence levels.
Try finding women or men’s athletic pants and tops that make you feel strong and motivated. Make sure you have good shoes that you think look amazing on you. Determining your own gym-wear style can make a big difference.

4. Keep Your ‘Why’ in Mind

If you find yourself at the gym, feeling unmotivated and lacking confidence, a great way to get your head back in the game is by reminding yourself of your goals. Why did you sign up for a gym membership? What made you drive all the way there? What do you hope to get out of your workouts?
Reminding yourself of the ‘why’ behind your trip to the gym can reinvigorate you with a dose of fresh inspiration. When you know why you are doing what you are doing, you can give it your all.

5. Don’t Compare Yourself

Few things diminish a person’s confidence faster than comparison, and the gym can be one of the hardest places to avoid it! Maybe the guy on the treadmill next to yours is sprinting intervals and you're doing what you can just to jog for fifteen minutes. Maybe there’s someone in the weights room who is lifting 50lbs more than you can.
The next time you think about the ways in which you do not measure up to someone else at the gym, consider this: everyone has to start somewhere. Nobody gets stronger overnight. They get stronger by showing up and exercising, and that is exactly what you are doing, too!

Don't Stop!

Nothing should keep you from meeting your goals, especially when it comes to taking care of yourself. With these six tips, you can take steps to feeling more confident during your next workout.
