8 Small Diet and Exercise Changes That Will Impact Your Fitness Goals

Reaching your fitness goals can be a challenge. Luckily, there are simple and small swaps you can make to your exercise and eating habits that can help you blow right past them. Avoid your next fitness plateau by making these eight small lifestyle changes.

1. Assess Your Goals

If you really want to reach and even surpass your fitness goals, then they have to be realistic. That doesn't mean to pick something you know you can do next week as a long term goal because you do want to challenge yourself to reach new heights. Instead, look to set realistic goals that will take dedication and determination to reach.

2. Track Your Activities

It is critical that you know what activities you are regularly doing and what foods you are eating. Even that snack size candy bar you grabbed from the office break room. Be honest when identifying your current eating and exercise habits, or you won't be able to make meaningful changes.

3. Eat More Plants

Diets rich in plant-based foods have been linked to better overall health and lower rates of obesity. Plants are packed with heart-healthy and digestion-boosting fiber that can help you feel full longer and regulate blood sugar levels. They are also a great source of polyphenols, which act as antioxidants and can lower levels of chronic inflammation.

4. Try a New Exercise

It is easy to get stuck in a fitness rut. Break past fitness plateaus by trying new and varied exercises. If you regularly stick to cardio classes, try a group barbell session. Think beyond exercise, too, and seek out recreational activities that are fun and challenging.

5. Find a Fitness Friend

Establishing a support system is an excellent way to keep on track with fitness goals. Find someone who shares your interests so you can exercise together. Just make sure that you and your friend will hold each other accountable for sticking to your schedule.

6. Stay Hydrated

Water is crucial to pretty much everything that goes on in your body. You need to drink enough so that urine runs clear or very pale yellow. If that isn't the case, then up your water intake. Look for sparkling waters and add fruit to boost the appeal.

7. Set a Nighttime Routine

Sleep is important, and you need at least seven to eight hours of it every night. Research indicates that people who do not get enough sleep are more likely to develop obesity and some serious chronic health conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Set a nighttime routine that does not include blue-light producing tech devices.

8. Practice Forgiveness

When everything is said and done, you aren't perfect. No one is. Practice forgiveness when you make a mistake or choose that chocolate cake for dessert. There will be bumps along the road to your fitness goals, just don't let one throw you completely off the path.
